Screenprinting Basics

Course Details

Learn the exciting art of screenprinting and how to turn photos, texts and illustrations into beautiful hand-crafted prints.

This introductory workshop introduces you to the principles of screenprinting, including preparing stencils, transferring images onto acetate, coating and exposing screens, printing on fine art paper and registration techniques.

Spend two full days in the NAS printmaking studios with artist Janet Parker-Smith, who gives demonstrations and expert guidance in basic screenprinting methodologies.

NAS supplies all inks and mediums, and you bring printing papers and a selection of personal images to inspire your artworks and complete an edition of single colour screenprints. This course is designed for newcomers with little or no previous screenprinting experience.

*NAS Short Courses are open to students of ages 16 years and over. The NAS Art Club is open to students from ages 15 years and over.

Art Materials

Students must supply their own art materials, please refer to the list below.

• 6 x plastic containers for mixing inks
• 2 x pencils for drawing - type 2B
• 1 x black fine and 1 x medium permanent markers
• 10 x sheets of butcher’s paper, size A3 or bigger
• 1 x sheet of wet media acetate A1 size 100mic
• 3 x sheets of Stonehenge paper (56 x 76cm) white or off white
• 6 x sheets of cartridge paper for printing and proofing (Size A2)
• 2 x plastic kitchen spatula
• Ruler, scissors, Stanley knife
• Notebook or sketchbook
• Apron and gloves
• Roll of masking tape (painters tape if possible)
• Photos and images of own choice
• Other materials if you want, e.g. fabric, other papers for printing onto

  • Covered footwear is essential in all studios on campus.

Janet Parker-Smith is a Sydney based artist whoes practice incorporates Printmedia, Sculpture, collage and Altered books. She has been exhibiting nationally and internationally for over 25 years. She has had several solo exhibitions and has been chosen as a finalist in many art competitions. Her work has been purchased by the AGNSW and NGV. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections. Janet works in the Public Programs and is a sessional teacher at the National Art school. She has been teaching across Printmaking and bookmaking for over 25 years.
