Studying at NAS is a truly unique education experience enabling students to develop, explore and immerse fully in their own unique art practice under expert guidance, with small class sizes, hands-on, studio-based learning and dedicated studio spaces.

The National Art School is Australia’s largest and most respected School of Fine Art. Established in 1843, the School has attracted talented students from across Australia and warmly welcomes international students to our historic campus in the heart of Sydney. NAS offers three degree programs: Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) and Doctorate of Fine Art.

International students at NAS join a rich, multicultural community and are taught by practicing artists dedicated to their craft. NAS offers outstanding fine art education with small class sizes, hands-on studio-based learning and dedicated studio spaces located among the School’s original sandstone buildings. Studying at NAS provides a unique opportunity for students to develop and immerse themselves in their own creative practice under expert guidance.

International applicants with an International Baccalaureate or a qualification equivalent to the Australian High School Certificate may apply for the Bachelor of Fine Art through UAC. All other applicants should submit an application form online.

International applicants are subject to the same eligibility requirements and selection process as domestic students and must also meet the English language requirements.

Interview Process

Admission to the Bachelor of Fine Art is competitive and based on an interview and portfolio assessment. After submitting your application through UAC or directly to NAS, and once eligibility requirements are confirmed, Student Recruitment Team will contact you with details of your interview time and date.

During the interview, applicants will present their portfolio and discuss their interest in studying fine art, their current practice, and their motivations for studying at the National Art School. Applicants who are located overseas and unable to attend in person may submit their portfolio and supporting materials electronically for assessment.

Resources

Australia provides rigorous protection for international students through the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act) and related legislation, which protects and enhances Australia’s reputation for quality education, provides tuition protection and supports the integrity of the student visa program.

Study Australia is a great resource for information about living in Australia and to help with understanding the cost of living while you’re studying.

It is a requirement of the Department of Home Affairs that prospective international students can demonstrate that they have sufficient funds while living in Australia.

Living costs include items such as:

  • Accommodation (including rental bond)
  • Electricity and/or gas
  • Entertainment
  • Food
  • Personal and household items
  • Telephone and internet bills
  • Transport (bus/train)

To find out more about living expenses in Australia, visit the Australian Government’s Study Australia website.

During your stay in Australia you are permitted to work for up to 48 hours per fortnight during teaching periods, and unlimited hours outside teaching periods. Certain categories of voluntary, unpaid work is included in this total, and work undertaken as part of your course is not included. You should not rely on working to fund your tuition or living expenses while in Australia as work cannot be guaranteed and spending excessive amounts of time working may adversely affect your studies. Applications for work visas can only be submitted after you have arrived in Australia and started your classes. The Department of Home Affairs determines work entitlement for students.

To find out more about working while studying in Australia, visit the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs website.

As part of your arrival support, the National Art School will provide useful information to assist with your visa, what to bring, getting there and orientation.

To find out more, email Student Services.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is insurance for international students to help them with the costs of medical and hospital care they may require while they are in Australia. OSHC does not cover dental treatment. National Art School’s preferred provider is Medibank.

The Australian Government requires all international students on a student visa and their dependants to purchase an approved policy from an Australian registered health fund for the duration of their visas. OSHC is not included in tuition fees.
