Grad show NAS entrance

The National Art School is Australia’s leading independent art school, dedicated to exceptional, studio-based art education and shaping contemporary art practice.

Our campus sits within the sandstone walls of the former Darlinghurst Gaol on unceded Gadigal land – Country that has been a place of movement, ceremony and creativity for thousands of generations. We honour Gadigal sovereignty and embed First Peoples’ histories and knowledge throughout our teaching.

Since moving to this site in 1922, the National Art School has transformed a place once marked by incarceration into one of artistic freedom and experimentation. Our heritage campus offers a uniquely immersive environment for learning and making. Today we stand at the centre of East Sydney’s cultural precinct and continue to be an important catalyst for Australian art. Our students, staff and alumni shape culture locally, nationally and internationally.

Director's Welcome

Situated in the heart of Sydney on Gadigal land, the National Art School campus is vibrant and creative space located in the former Darlinghurst Gaol. For over 100 years this iconic site has been reimagined as a space of art education. Our graduates are some of Australian’s leading artists and creatives who are shaping the global and national art and cultural ecology.

At the National Art School we value difference, independence and collaboration. We foster a strong sense of community and connection; through your study experience you will form lifelong friendships and establish important professional networks.

We look forward to welcoming you to the National Art School as you join the next generation of artists and inspire others through your art.
