Transgender Art Through History

Course Details

Dr Christine Dean presents an illuminating lecture outlining the idealisation of hermaphrodite bodies in Ancient Greece to the Queer activism of the Post-Stonewall era, introducing the work of a diverse selection of transgender artists throughout history. Contemporary artists include Pippa Garner from the United States who explored the body in relation to mass production and commodity fetishism to Shieko Reto from Malaysia who explores the tensions of being both transgender and Muslim to Yuki Kihara from New Zealand who subverts the colonial gaze. This lecture
acknowledges that transgender culture is both ancient and global.

This workshop is for participants over the age of 18 and for all levels of experience. It is a LGBTQI+ friendly event.

Dr Christine Dean is an artist, educator and writer who has been exhibiting since 1988. In 2000 she was awarded a Pollock-Krasner fellowship and in 2001 undertook a residency at the 18th Street Arts Centre, Los Angeles as part of an Australia Council research grant. Over the past three decades the focus of Christine’s art practice has been to create relationships linking abstraction and typography with gender and sexuality. In 1986 Christine completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Sydney majoring in Fine Arts; a Diploma in Secondary Art Education from Sydney Teachers College in 1989; a Graduate Diploma in Painting, Sydney College of the Arts in 1990; a Masters of Fine Arts, University of NSW in 2003 and a PhD from the University of NSW in 2010.
