Harper Anthonysz

Harper Anthonysz (b. 2004, Australia) has a BFA from the National Art School and is currently undertaking BFA Honours. Anthonysz is a painter whose practice centres on ornament and allegorical representation, exploring conventions and expectations of femininity. Influenced by history, mythology, and semiotic theory, her work explores the intersections between symbols, their meanings, and the processes of meaning-making. Using hand-carved wood panels painted in oil, Anthonysz builds dense, layered compositions that embrace visual chaos and use familiar imagery in unfamiliar ways. Anthonysz disrupts conventions of subject matter and symbolism, reminding audiences that they actively shape beliefs and construct meaning.
