Daniel Togewasi Hull

Daniel Togewasi Hull’s painting practice explores the familiar and strange. Drawing from his mixed Papuan and Australian heritage, Hull considers how inherited cultural objects can function as points of connection to family and ancestry while remaining partially unavailable. Beginning with observational drawing, Hull works through processes of rotation, reflection, refraction and abstraction. Inherited objects and motifs are fragmented, negated or partially dissolved within layered fields of blue, hovering between recognition and obscurity. ‘Painting has become a way of working from within an uncertain cultural inheritance. The objects remain close to me and distant at the same time; familiar, strange, and not fully available.’.
