Vernon Ah Kee - Lecture

Thursday 16 February 2017
6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
National Art School
156 Forbes Street Darlinghurst, NSW 2010 Australia

Artist Vernon Ah Kee discusses his exhibition not an animal or a plant at the National Art School Gallery and reflects on the 1967 referendum: what it meant for him and his family and what has changed 50 years on.

This exhibition, Ah Kee’s largest to date, is a thought-provoking portrait of black and white political issues, attitudes and ideologies. The project marks the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum in Australia which recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and included them in the census. 2017 also marks Ah Kee’s 50th birthday. When he was born in far north Queensland he was not counted as a citizen.

Through masterful drawings of his forebears to text-based installations and paintings, Ah Kee delivers provocative investigation of contemporary Australian culture.

Tickets: $12 per person, including a glass of wine or beer.
