The Bar of Love and Protest
The National Art School is proud to be an exhibition partner of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 2018.
Join us at the Bar for the Museum of Love & Protest to celebrate all that is Mardi Gras. Open for each Friday and Saturday night during the exhibition, the Bar is the perfect place to amplify the Museum of Love & Protest experience.

Saturday 24 February: Mardi Gras Archive Roadshow featuring Helen Grace & Jane Becker
DJ: House of Mince
A community show & tell featuring Helen Grace’s proofsheets of dramatic photographs she took outside Central Court in the days following the arrests of 24 June 1978. And Jane Becker shares her collection of original concept drawings for Parade floats and Party scenic, from the mid 90s-early 2000s. Bring along a treasure from your own Mardi Gras collection for show & tell.

DJ: DJ Sveta
Iconic DJ Stephen Allkins and Sandra from the Oxford have known each other for 40 years and their paths have crossed through Stranded, Oxford St clubbing, Mardi Gras & Sleaze Ball parties and The Oxford. They lived through AIDS and lost a lot of shared friends. Two good friends reminisce and share their Mardi Gras history.

Two 1978ers, filmmaker Su Goldfish and community artist-curator Alissar Chidiac discuss their experience of the events of 1978, the political context of the times, their shared histories, the evolving relationship of women to Mardi Gras over time, and where they direct their activism today.
