In Our Time addresses themes ranging from urban life, Chinese philosophy and cultural difference to social justice, human rights and nationhood. It represents a dynamic period of recent Chinese art and history, as artists responded to and navigated momentous economic and political changes.

Over a 35-year period from the mid-1980s, Australian economist, diplomat and former Ambassador to China, Dr Geoff Raby AO assembled an outstanding collection of contemporary artworks by more than 75 artists working in both China and in Australia, as members of the Chinese diaspora. In Our Time presents more than 70 pieces from this group of works, now part of the La Trobe University Art Collection. The exhibition has been produced for the National Art School in partnership with La Trobe Art Institute.
