Warwick Thornton is an Australian film director, screenwriter, cinematographer and photographer. He is a Kaytetye man, born and raised in Alice Springs. His debut feature film Samson and Delilah won the Caméra d’Or at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and the award for Best Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. He also won the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Film in 2017 for Sweet Country. He recently wrote, directed and starred in critically acclaimed TV series The Beach on SBS, and regularly exhibits politically charged photography.

In his art practice, Thornton is interested in negotiating the traces within colonial history, and the ongoing presence in contemporary landscapes, of Indigenous Australians. Thornton is represented by Anna Schwartz Gallery, and recently had his work included in the 22nd Biennale of Sydney: NIRIN (2020). Thornton will discuss his career, creative output and the creative
process itself in conversation with NAS alumnus and painting lecturer, Les Rice.
