@nicplowman is one of 64 finalists in the 23rd Dobell Drawing Prize show with his work ‘From Life (Drawing #2)’ 2022. Now showing at NAS Gallery until 10 June 2023.
A while ago, during a 12-hour drawing marathon, Plowman chose to work across seven large sheets of paper on the floor, aligning his aspirations with the ‘scale’ of the session. Life drawing in this format (time and scale) is a physical and mental adventure for Plowman, involving standing, kneeling, and sitting ‘in’ the work, moving from one side of the room to the other, smudging with socks and mixing media, bodies, and time.
At the end of the drawing marathon, Plowman took the rolled-up drawings back to his studio to finish, and this work is the second ‘completed’ drawing from this series. At the core of Plowman’s practice is an interest in figurative representation and the human condition; an interrogation into ideas of vulnerability and strength, motivated by personal experiences. The practice of drawing gives Plowman ‘nowhere to hide, but everywhere to run’.
Nic Plowman’s work is full of observation and insight, describing time, memory and lived experience with both intimacy and visceral energy. Plowman is primarily known for his dedication to both traditional and experimental drawing. His broader practice includes painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

@loripensini is one of 64 finalists in the 23rd Dobell Drawing Prize show with her work ‘Chatterbox Fortune Tellers – The Rare Bird Extinction Series #2’, 2022. Now showing at NAS Gallery until 10 June 2023.
‘Chatterbox Fortune Tellers – The Rare Bird Extinction Series #2’ twists the childhood game of chatterbox fortune telling into a dystopian projection of a future without birds. Each ‘chatterbox’ displays four critically endangered, endangered, or extinct Australian bird species, and each playing outcome arrives at the same cataclysmic point spotlighting species elimination. The aim is to emphasise the acute fragility of the environment and the need for urgent action to stabilise the ecological disequilibrium brought about by our former and current land mismanagement. Paradoxically, the act of ‘playing the game’ critically marks the fact that this isn’t a game, our planetary health isn’t something we can gamble on.
Pensini’s art practice is an exploration of herself, her identity and her placement within her family’s multifaceted history. It is illustrated directly from responses to, and relationship with the landscape. Pensini lives and works on Kaneang and Bibbulmun Country, Western Australia.

@anastasiaparmson.art is one of 64 finalists in the 23rd Dobell Drawing Prize show with her work ‘Untitled (Then we watched Arnold Schwarzenegger movies overdubbed into nasal Russian), 2021. Now showing at NAS Gallery until 10 June 2023.
Parmson’s drawing installation is part of a body of work titled ‘I Drew A Line And Called It Home’. The installation consists of a retro sideboard with an 80s television set: a two-dimensional drawing on the panel that slightly extends into space, decorated with a few mundane domestic products.
During her childhood in Soviet-occupied Estonia, Parmson’s access to Western media and entertainment was severely limited. However, as the Iron Curtain began to crumble, Hollywood movies started to appear on television and non-political Arnold Schwarzenegger action flicks became popular. Unfortunately, all Western movies were dubbed into Russian, by a single person! Regardless of what was happening on the screen, each character’s lines were read in the narrator’s peculiar monotonous nasal voice, a memory so striking Parmson felt compelled to include it in her work.
Anastasia Parmson is an award-winning artist born in Estonia. She has Siberian roots, a French education and is currently living and working in Sydney, Australia.

Bronwyn Van De Graaff is one of 64 finalists in the 23rd Dobell Drawing Prize show with her work ‘Saguaro' 2022. Now showing at NAS Gallery until 10 June 2023.Van De Graaff is a classical realist artist specialising in still life oil painting and botanical portraits in graphite and watercolour. Her approach is to explore a subject's fundamental essence: its form, rhythms, history, place in the environment, and seasonal changes. This involves immersive observation and highly detailed drawings from life involving many layers of tonal shading. These drawings can take months to produce.This work is a portrait of the saguaro cactus indigenous to the Sonora Desert in Mexico and Arizona, United States. This specimen was drawn from life in a garden in Bendigo, Victoria. The cactus grows to a towering thirteen-sixteen metres. Van De Graaff was intrigued by the impenetrable protective fortress of spikes and spines yet notes that some brave little souls, like spiders and ants, call it home. Born in Sydney and now living in Avoca Beach on Dhudhuroa and Yaitmathang country with her family, Bronwyn practised as a criminal lawyer before becoming a full-time painter in 2012.
