The National Art School Print Lab is a professional digital print facility available to students, alumni and our wider arts community. We print for galleries, fine art photographers, illustrators, printmakers, painters, archivists, secondary school students and those wanting high quality digital printing. Established in September 2017 the Print Lab has fast become the print lab of choice for artists exhibiting in both Sydney and regional galleries.

Attention to detail:
The Print Lab is committed to high quality printing and prides itself on attention to detail. We believe the success of the lab is our collaborative studio environment where clients are encouraged to discuss their individual printing requirements and smooth over any questions before to printing.  All files are soft proofed and check for discrepancies that may lead to poor quality prints, should we discover any issues you will be notified prior to printing. We can assist in file preparation, colour management, sizing and print material options. All prints are trimmed and inspected for quality assurance prior to packing.

We offer a range of premium and general purpose printing options. Our canvas and premium fine art paper are Hahnemuhle, Canson, Ilford Galerie, Sihl Canvas, and Ulano Film with general printing on Epson and HP. We print on 44inch, 42inch, 24inch and 17inch rolls as well as A2 and A3+ sheets (limited stock). Our HP Clear film is a popular choice for printmakers looking to create large positives in preparation for screen printing.

The Print Lab comprises of two large format high resolution inkjet printers. All scanning is supported by our Epson V800 and Silverfast software. We use both PC and Mac platforms.

The Print Lab is all about Colour Management. What is colour management? I have been never happier with the professional quality of my student’s artwork. Being a rural school, we struggle to access quality printing. Amanda was extremely helpful in ensuring that the artworks were of the highest quality and she offered professional assistance every time. The artworks were completed in an efficient timeframe and I would happily recommend the Print Lab to everyone. This is just the beginning of an exciting relationship between the Print Lab and our school.

We were really happy with our experience working with the NAS Print Lab – being remote and unable to see proofs or paper stock in person we had to rely on their expertise over the phone and email, and we weren’t disappointed. The staff were extremely thorough and responsive to our needs from the initial enquiry through to arranging a quote, printing and arranging the delivery of our order. Amanda was approachable, super attentive and did a brilliant job – we’re very satisfied.

Mimili Maku Arts is an Aṉangu owned and governed contemporary art studio located on the APY lands in remote South Australia. Working with NAS has allowed Mimili artists to work beyond remote studio limitations and develop new ideas. In particular the print lab has been of great assistance to staff and artists alike, with reliable phone and email support and a quick turn around with high quality results. Our work with NAS and the print lab has just started and we are excited for an ongoing relationship and all the possibilities it will bring.

Call them first!

I couldn’t have been happier with my dealings with NAS Print Lab! I’ve been a colour management consultant since 2001 (so I use colour-managed workflows everyday) and I have to say, the print work I got from NAS was absolutely bang on. Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper, my images just sang.

We are delighted to announce NAS alumna Rosemary Lee as the winner of the 24th Dobell Drawing Prize, Australia’s leading prize for drawing, worth $30,000.

Selected from 56 nationwide finalists, and 965 entries, Rosemary’s work will become part of the National Art School’s significant collection, built over the past 120 years. Rosemary, in her winning work 24-1 (2024), observes tonal and compositional profundity in everyday life.

The judging panel comprising acclaimed First Nations artist Vernon Ah Kee, Paula Latos-Valier AM, Trustee and Art Director of the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation, and Dr Yolunda Hickman, Head of Postgraduate Studies, National Art School, commented of Rosemary’s work: “The decision to award the 24th Dobell Drawing Prize to Rosemary Lee for the work ‘24-1’ was unanimous. We were most impressed by the level of visual intensity the artist has achieved in this work both through its vibrant colour and in the extraordinary detail of the composition. The artwork’s exploration of the urban landscape and gentrification of the Sydney suburbs of Ashfield and Summer Hill, has produced an image capturing a broader sense of transience and the omnipresence of construction sites in our cities today. It questions the cultural and historical value of place, through the lens of the artist’s personal connection.”

Making Sound is a performance event featuring four artists who make devices that make sound, including Gary Warner, Pia van Gelder, Ben Denham and Sean O’Connell, presented following Facture: Drawing Symposium 2025, Saturday 12 April 5-6pm.

Gary Warner creates an improvised soundfield with his ‘aleatoric ensemble’ autonomous sound machines, a collection of modified turntables that spin ad-hoc bric-a-brac assemblages.

Pia van Gelder (pictured) amplifies an electronic circuit as it is built in real-time. Under the moniker of “PvG sans PCB,” in these performances, van Gelder works on a breadboard with electronic components and additional found objects to demonstrate the electronic variabilities produced in the material world.

Ben Denham and Sean O’Connell perform together with handmade synthesizer systems that sense and sonify barometric pressure and the flow of electrons through matter.
