Emergency Assistance Grant (EAG) at NAS

We are pleased to announce the release of the new Emergency Assistance Grant.  The Emergency Assistance Grant (EAG) provides financial assistance for students with emergency needs impacting their ability to continue their academic studies and to alleviate financial hardship. The grant is made possible through the generosity donors to our annual appeal.

Grants are normally issued for values between $250 to $1000, dependant on need and the provided estimates/quotes supporting the application.  The number of grants available and the total fund amount is limited each year. The fund does not have the capacity to support a recipient with ongoing costs and chronic need. The grant should only be used in support of emergency and/or unexpected expenses, basic needs, and/or materials for the course.

EAG Criteria

    1. Students currently enrolled in BFA, MFA, DFA, and be satisfactorily engaged in their study (e.g. meeting required milestones and/or grade thresholds for successful completion of their courses).
    2. Be able to demonstrate low income (i.e. a combination of income from paid employment/Centrelink/other support allowances and grants).
    3. Is experiencing severe financial hardship due to an emergency/unexpected expense (e.g. bereavement, medical need, housing insecurity) and/or requires immediate assistance to meet basic needs due to circumstances beyond their control (e.g. groceries, medication, transport).
    4. There is a reasonable expectation that the award of the grant will enable continuation of studies and that the need is temporary and not to support ongoing, chronic need.

What kind of support can I receive through the Emergency Assistance Grant?

  • Vouchers for food & transport.
  • Unforeseen severe financial hardship (eg medical costs, bills, rent).
  • Essential art materials.

How do I apply for the Emergency Assistance Grant?

    1. Seek out an appointment with one of the staff members on the referral team (Wellbeing Officer or NAS Counsellor).
    2. The team will work out what is best for your situation and assist you with the application process.
    3. Once you have gathered the necessary supporting documentation, your application will be submitted for approval.

How long does it take to receive support?

The NAS staff referral team will work out the best type of support for your situation. If you’re eligible for Woolworths and transport vouchers, you can get them at the initial assessment to use straight away.

If successful the EAG may take up to two weeks to organise.

What Documentation might I need?
You’ll need to provide copies of supporting documents you would like to be considered in the assessment of your application, for example:

  • a bank statement,
  • a Centrelink statement,
  • your bills that need to be paid.
