Art Guide Australia: Tattoos are more than SKIN DEEP in NAS Queer Contemporary

The Mardi Gras festival kicks off on 19 February and NAS Queer Contemporary, at the National Art School, is once again contributing visual spice to the program. This year, SKIN DEEP features the tattooed bodies and intimate stories of LGBTQI+ people in a series of performances and two exhibitions.

In SKIN DEEP the exhibition, Sydney-based fashion photographer WADED presents photographic portraits of LGBTQI+ bodies. Her subjects come in all shapes and sizes, but they share a passion for tattoos and a willingness to flash their flesh. Visitors are invited to participate in the exhibition by sharing their own tattoo tales to an interactive story wall.

First year BFA Photomedia students opened `Dead Ringers: Photographic Remake` exhibition on Thursday.

The exhibition continues until this Saturday in the Hoff Space. Visit us this weekend to explore 45 photographs that take Jean-Luc Godard`s words as one of the creative prompts: `It’s not where you take things from—it’s where you take them to."

The Rayner Hoff Project Space will be open from 11am–5pm. Don`t forget to also visit `The Neighbour at the Gate` in NAS Gallery, now open on Sundays 11am-5pm.

All students are encouraged to apply to our Early Admissions Round before 21 August 2025 to secure their place.

Applications for the School Recommendation Scheme close on 4 October. If you`re applying for a scholarship, be sure to submit your application by this deadline as well.

This semester, printmaking lecturer Stephanie Nova Milne has been guiding students as they explore 3D printing in their creative practice, and the results are incredible.

We look forward to seeing what they create next.
