Kim Spooner has been practicing as a visual artist since the 1980s when she first established her studio in Oxford Street Darlinghurst and began exploring painting processes and techniques. At times a prolific exhibitor and always active, her art involves constant dialogue with contemporary and historical masters, as well as referencing significant literary works. She explores narratives using metaphor and allegory as she recalls personal histories and creates visual stories that refer to the human condition. She is a figurative artist with expertise in encaustic and egg tempera techniques as well as a skilful draughtsman
Kim’s art has always kept step with her open journey through life and the decisions she makes in her art and career are directed by the shifts and challenges her life presents. With little formal art training and a domestic life as a solo parent of three, she has traversed the winding path of an artist’s life, exhibiting at major Commercial Galleries throughout Australia. Spooner has work in major public and private art collections. In recent times her creative explorations have led to writing books and accompanying them with paintings and drawings.
Spooner has been a Lecturer at the National Art School for more than 2 decades; she has won prestigious Awards and Art Prizes and been a Finalist in many including the Archibald, Sulman and Dobell Prize for Drawing. She is currently working on an Autobiographical Series of 300 small Works on Paper – Bookmarks – to be exhibited in 2023.
