Course Overview

Learn how to use Procreate as an artist, where you make the decisions, not the software! Curate your own customised colour palettes rather than using pre-set digital colour palettes for a more authentic look; learn to mix naturalistic skin tones for portraits and represent the real paint-tube colours used in traditional and contemporary painting modes. Speed up your art process and experiment with ideas for new paintings that realistically predict outcomes of future real-life artworks. Rose Morrison guides you to create a convincing ‘likeness’ of your subject with their individual features and how to demystify the complicated realistic rendering of hair.

She teaches you how to use Procreate’s digital layering and non-destructive editing tools for endless creative possibilities with a focus on portrait painting. She covers the essential drawing skills to create solid forms and compositions; paint mixing and blending techniques to master realistic skin, and how to achieve traditional and contemporary fine art techniques such as oil, watercolour and acrylic painting, glazing in layers, stroke economy, textural brush mark making, lighting and special effects all created in a digital format on the iPad.

Learn how to make digital brush movements that mimic real-life brush marks and move away from the predictable looks of digital painting, which are akin to using the automatic mode on camera. Discover how to work effectively with the planes and geometric shapes of the head, to understand the anatomy of the skull and face. Rather than copy or trace your subject, Rose guides you in how to build a 3D form within a 2D space and develop an organic workflow that prioritises spontaneity over digital predictability, to create lively and imperfect outcomes. By the end of the course you will understand how to produce unique portrait paintings and make fine art prints.

This course is for students who have completed the NAS Real Artists use Procreate! Digital Drawing and Painting for Beginners online short course or have prior experience using Procreate on their iPad.

There are many reasons why you will love digital drawing and painting:
Unlimited art supplies
No need to wait for paint to dry
No carbon footprint or waste of resources
Transfer digital skills to real-life paintings
Create a workflow to enhance and speed up your painting methods
