Course Outline

Develop and refine your understanding of the visual language of painting and build confidence in your own practice. Nick Collerson guides you in how to choose meaningful subject matter and translate it into imagery while understanding how to decide on appropriate styles to render your paintings in colour. Be guided through a series of exercises that introduce the basic principles intrinsic to painting, including style, colour mixing and application, and idea development. Nick leads group discussions and demonstrates how to identify students’ individual areas of interest and translate them into content for artworks. He also introduces expressive painting techniques, abstraction, colour as a powerful emotive tool, and translation of narrative into visual language. The initial exercises will be set in either acrylic or oil paints, and students can also add mixed media as the course progresses. Nick gives individual tuition to assist students with deciphering their initial ideas, developing their compositions, and applying techniques to develop a suite of finished paintings.

*Short courses are open to students of ages 16 years and over. For students under 16 years of age there are School Holiday Workshops, Art Club and other youth art programs.

Lecturer Profile

Nick Collerson is a Sydney based artist and teacher who has held numerous solo exhibitions. His painting practice is not aligned with one style, instead he chooses to explore many diverse ways of making paintings and places equal emphasis on the material, poetic and perceptual aspects of art making. Nick also lectures in the undergraduate programs in the NAS Painting Department. Nick is represented by Liverpool Gallery in Sydney.
