course overview

Learn the art of handbuilding ceramic pots and the fundamental techniques used by cultures from ancient times to the present day. Glenn Barkley teaches you how to develop pots with personal significance and to see them as containers of memory and celebration with physical and metaphorical potential that mark special occasions and commemorations. The course includes museum and site visits as well as  intensive handbuilding practice in the NAS studios, where you will develop confidence in the ability of your hands to explore form, scale and proportion in creating unique artworks in clay. Participants are encouraged to bring material relating to the event, anniversary or person they seek to commemorate which may be used in the final work. The course is suitable both for beginners and for those wishing to refresh their handbuilding skills. Selected works will be fired and collected at a later date.
