Course Overview

This course is for students with prior painting experience who wish to develop a distinct personal aesthetic and visual language while extending their understanding of painterly practice. Students will be guided to discover creative possibilities in both abstract and figurative painting and expand their knowledge of paint and materials. Projects will aim to develop students instinct for composition as well as how paint mixing and paint application help towards making successful paintings. Both individual and group direction will enable students to interpret projects independently. Nick is an enthusiastic teacher who draws upon a broad range of historical and culture perspectives to deepen his students understanding and instinct for art making.

Lecturer Profile

Nick Collerson is a Sydney based artist and teacher who has held numerous solo exhibitions. His painting practice is not aligned with one style, instead he chooses to explore many diverse ways of making paintings and places equal emphasis on the material, poetic and perceptual aspects of art making. Nick also lectures in the undergraduate programs in the NAS Painting Department. Nick is represented by Liverpool Gallery in Sydney.

Art materials

For Week 1 of the course, students should only bring basic materials as listed below. Nick will discuss more specific needs with everyone on the first night. Nick will also bring a basic supply of art materials on the first night to ensure that students do not make unnecessary purchases. Experienced students may bring along their paints and an assortment of brushes and tools.
