This exciting new course combines textiles with creative drawing using diverse processes and embracing techniques such as stitching on paper and fabric, collage, assemblage to achieve individual results. Armando Chant shows you how drawing is intimately connected to textiles, introducing you to sketching, painting, weaving and embroidering lines on the surface of papers and textiles, and exploring the materiality of different surfaces. Armando introduces you to leading artists in the field, to develop your understanding of the relationship between drawing and fibres, traces and threads. The course is designed to be open and explorative with an emphasis on experimenting with diverse drawing practices to create imaginative artworks.
Armando Chant’s practice is founded in the act of drawing, and mark making, and the inter-relationships between gesture, surface and space. He has participated in group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally that reflect his expansive and explorative approach which bridge the gaps between art/artisanal creative practices and challenge the perceptions of where the drawn mark exists. His work has been shown in regional centres including the Tamworth Textile Triennial 2015, where the work was acquired by the gallery for its collection, and its 2020 edition. He was a finalist in the Wangaratta 2019 Contemporary Textile Award Biennial and in arts festivals such as Sydney Art Month and Head On Photography Festival. Armando has been a curator, artist-in-residence, delivered symposium and created installations in Florence, Finland and France.
