Course Overview

Learn practical drawing techniques and allow your creativity to emerge in a supportive studio environment. Discover how to see and draw with proportion and perspective and how to work from small studies to larger, sustained drawings. Learn about the importance of line, tone, composition and mark-making and explore the mediums of graphite, charcoal and ink. Cameron Ferguson sets projects and gives you the opportunity to draw still life scenes and to work from the life model. Through demonstrations, group exercises and one-to-one tuition, he will guide you to develop your own unique way of seeing and drawing.

lecturer profile

Cameron Ferguson specialises in drawing and watercolour, with over 15 years’ experience working and exhibiting in Sydney. He has taught drawing for a range of institutions, including TAFE, community colleges and high schools, as well as conducting recent workshops at the National Art School. Cameron has completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) at the National Art School and a Graduate Diploma in Education at the University of Technology, Sydney, and is currently completing a Master of Fine Art by Research. His research is situated within the still life genre and object-based art, involving creating a series of drawings and installations that form associations between objects, place and memory.

For the first class, please bring:
A4 sketchbook
Set of graphite pencils from 2B to 8B
Charcoal pencil
Pencil sharpener or Stanley knife
Pencil eraser
2 bulldog clips
Willow charcoal
Compressed charcoa
Cotton rag
Fixative spray
Pad of A2 cartridge paper.
Other materials will be required throughout the course – these will be discussed a week prior to each class
