Course Overview

Gain confidence in your art practice, enjoy taking chances and prepare to be taken out of your comfort zone! This exciting course combines the fundamentals of painting and drawing with an emphasis on developing your powers of observation, technical skills, and the satisfaction of creating original artworks from real life subjects. Maryanne Wick teaches you how to prepare surfaces and mix colours in either oil or acrylic paints. She leads daily discussions about Australian and international art and artists, sets group exercises, and provides individual tutorials with detailed feedback about your work as you progress throughout the week, all in a supportive and friendly studio environment.

Lecturer Profile

Maryanne Wick is primarily known for her still life painting, portraiture and drawing. She is a graduate from the National Art School and has lived and worked in Sydney, London, South Korea, Hong Kong and Spain. Her paintings and drawings are held in private and public collections, both in Australia and overseas.

Maryanne has held solo exhibitions in Australia, South Korea and Spain. She has been awarded artist residencies in Australia, China, Spain and the USA. A regular finalist in the Gallipoli Art Prize and the Korea-Australia Art Foundation Prize, Maryanne has participated in over eighty group exhibitions, including the Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Doug Moran Portrait Prize. In 2015, she was awarded the Korea-Australia Art Foundation prize for painting.

On Day One, we will be drawing, so have your drawing materials ready to use.

Drawing
1 graphite pencil (2B or 4B, try before you buy), sharpener, soft eraser
2 pieces of thick charcoal (Willow preferable)
White masking tape, medium width
Small journal/ sketchbook (A4) or some loose drawing paper
1 large piece of brown craft paper or 2 pieces of white cartridge paper.

Canvas boards if you prefer.  Plus – 1 x large piece of brown craft paper or 2 pieces of A1 white cartridge paper (for our painting exercise on Day 4). No butcher’s paper.
1 small bottle of odourless solvent (avoid turps) and a small glass container with lid
Linseed oil (optional for oil paint).  Gel medium (optional for acrylic paint)
250-gram tub of white acrylic Gesso and a wide, a flat brush (for priming your surfaces)
