Course Outline

Gain confidence in your art practice, enjoy taking chances and prepare to be taken out of your comfort zone! This exciting course combines the fundamentals of drawing and painting with an emphasis on developing your powers of observation, improving your technical skills, and the satisfaction of creating original artworks from real life subjects. Maryanne Wick teaches you how to prepare surfaces and gives demonstrations in drawing and painting, leads daily discussions about Australian and international artists, sets group exercises, and provides detailed feedback about your work as you progress throughout the week. All in a supportive and friendly studio environment.

*Short courses are open to students of ages 16 years and over. For students under 16 years of age there are School Holiday Workshops, Art Club and other youth art programs.

Lecturer Profile

Maryanne Wick is a graduate of the National Art School and is primarily known for her drawing, painting and print making. She has lived and worked in Sydney, London, South Korea, Hong Kong and Spain. Her paintings and drawings are held in private and public collections, both in Australia and overseas. Maryanne has held solo exhibitions in Australia, South Korea and Spain and, as a finalist, participated in group exhibitions that include the Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Doug Moran and Portia Geach Portrait Prizes, the Gallipoli Art Prize and Fisher’s Ghost Art Award. In 2015, she was awarded the Korea-Australia Art Foundation Prize for painting and in 2022, invited to participate in the prestigious Kedumba Drawing Award.

ART MATERIALS

Welcome to ‘Drawing and Painting with Confidence’. Have your drawing materials ready to use on the first day of the course.

Drawing

1 x piece of brown craft paper (larger than A1 size)

1 x drawing or sketch pad (A4 size)

2 x graphite pencils (2B and 4B), one sharpener, both a soft and hard eraser

Thick charcoal (Willow preferable)

Fixative (optional)

White paper masking tape, medium width (24 mm)

Painting

Paint – Choose either oil or acrylic. Bring all your paints! The essential primary colours required for the course are Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow (or a rich yellow), Ultramarine Blue, white and black.

BrushesBring your favourite brushes to the course. If you need to purchase brushes, natural or synthetic are fine. Aim for softer brushes in a range of widths (include wider brushes). A small set or a packet of brushes will be suitable to start.

2 canvases, pre-prepared on the frame. Aim for medium size canvases (not smaller than A4). Your choice of size and shape. Canvas boards if you prefer.

1 x large piece of brown craft paper (for Day 4). No butcher’s paper please.

250-gram tub of white acrylic Gesso  and a wide, flat brush (for priming your surfaces)

For oil painting, 1 x small bottle of odourless solvent (avoid turps) and a small glass jar with a lid.

For acrylic painting, a gel medium (optional).

Palette (a ceramic or plastic plate is fine).

Cling Wrap, a selection of rags (important).

Wear an Apron/ protective clothing. Covered footwear is essential in all studios on campus.
