Use the elements and principles of design and colour to investigate compositional structures to explore the varied possibilities of collage. Investigate the wide range of approaches, styles and techniques inherent in this art form, stimulating your imagination to discover creative possibilities.
In this practical course Deborah Marks demonstrates and guides you through structured weekly exercises, exploring colour schemes and the elements and principles of composition, including direction, contrast and harmony, repetition, rhythm and dominance. Learn how the elements of line, shape, tone, colour and texture and principles influence composition. Deborah uses the weekly briefs as a planned structure, students are encouraged to use their intuition and emotions to guide their decision making. The medium of collage allows for the combination of knowledge as well as intuition, chance and accidental artmaking, to produce highly original and unique artworks. Deborah also introduces you to the collage movements in 20th century art, as well as artists known in this field.
Individual guidance as well as group critiques will be given in order to facilitate the deeper understanding of this medium and its creative possibilities.
*Short courses are open to students of ages 16 years and over. For students under 16 years of age there are School Holiday Workshops, Art Club and other youth art programs.
Deborah Marks’ art practice includes painting, drawing, photography and collage. Deborah is inspired by her interest in psychological aspects of the human condition. Deborah has been a finalist in the Kedumba Art Award, the Portia Geach Memorial Award, the Mosman Art Prize, the Blake Prize and the Korean/Australian Arts Foundation Prize and was awarded the 2014 Kedumba Art Award. She has exhibited with Defiance Gallery, Charles Hewitt Gallery, Stanley Street Gallery and Kunstverein Murnau, Germany, and most recently exhibited with Wagner Contemporary, Sydney.
