course overview

Discover the witty art of collage as you play purposefully with pictures and acquire the technical skills to create your own high-quality works. Over two days, in an inspiring salon environment of storytelling, readings and conversation, Deborah Kelly will show you the cutting and composing practices of collage. You will be shown safe methods and tips for getting those very fine cuttings while you start to focus your ‘looking muscle’ to find, build and compose a number of works. Deborah will introduce you to her private collection of obsolete images – a treasure trove of abandoned art and science histories – and show you how to dissect them from their original contexts to make new art from their remains. A selection of papers, cutting mats, acid-free glue and image material is provided, though you are encouraged to bring your own books and images to dissect and resurrect.

Lecturer  profile

Deborah Kelly is a Sydney artist whose works have been shown around Australia and across Europe, Asia and the Americas. She has recently delivered collage masterclasses in Melbourne, Istanbul, Leipzig, Sydney and Bandung (West Java) and considers intensive collective art-making an artwork in and of itself. Deborah’s work was shortlisted for the 2016 National Works on Paper Prize and the Substation Contemporary Art Prize, and she won the 2015 Cayte Latta Memorial Award for Visual Art, the 2012 Albury Art Prize, the 2009 Fisher’s Ghost Award and the Screengrab International New Media Art Award. She has been included in the biennales of Sydney, Thessaloniki, Singapore, Venice and TarraWarra.

ART MATERIALS

Collage equipment such a cutting knives and mats will be provided along with source material. However, students are welcome to bring their own material, such as old magazines, art catalogues or textbooks. Older papers work well for collage due to their absorbency.

Any students who may have their own particular collage equipment are welcome to bring them to the class.

A visual arts diary for notes can be helpful.
